How To Reduce Energy Bills At Home In Summer
Over the last few months, we’ve all felt the pinch regarding our energy bills and with the recent announcement from Parliament that household energy bills increased by a record 54% in April 2022, and are likely to rise again in October, we’re all looking for tips on how to reduce energy bills at home. But don’t panic! We’ve rounded up five ways to save energy this summer that will help you reduce your energy bills.
Enjoy Natural Daylight & Summer Weather
Our first tip for how to reduce energy bills at home might seem obvious, but it’s often one we forget: spend more time outside. On June 21st we enjoyed the summer solstice, marking the return of lighter evenings, the perfect timing to try this tip; turn off your electronic devices (TVs, phones, computers and gaming consoles) and enjoy the great outdoors.
It’s also a fantastic time to swap your tumble dryer for a clothesline, which has been proven to save on average £30 a year on your energy bill and of course, it leaves your clothes feeling fresh and reduces your carbon footprint. But the energy savings the summer weather has to offer don’t stop there! More daylight hours means you can turn off your lights (these account for 15% of your energy bill) and benefit from natural lighting in your home.
Install An Air-To-Water Heat Pump
These quick tips will help achieve small savings, but your heating and cooling systems play the biggest role in how to reduce energy bills at home. An air-to-water heat pump works by transferring the outside air to an indoor space, by using the outdoor air for cooling and heating. In a simple switch, you could reduce your energy bills by 60% and cut CO2 emissions by 50% (these savings are even greater if you’re moving to a heat pump from coal or gas).

Switch to LED Light Bulbs
Why pay £8.42 a year for your halogen light bulb, when you could pay £1.71 and get over double the number of hours out of your LED bulb? You can use 75% less energy by simply switching your halogen bulbs to an LED and they last on average 10,000 hours compared to halogen’s 2000, not to mention they’re more environmentally friendly – really, it’s a no-brainer.
Keep Your Windows Closed
Our fourth tip for how to reduce energy bills at home is the opposite of what you might think; keep your windows closed in summer. If you follow the simple rule that if the weather is warmer outside, keep your windows closed and if it’s cooler outside crack them open, you can prevent letting warm air into your home.
If you’re still feeling hot under the collar, consider closing your curtains or blinds to prevent direct sunlight from entering your home. A great investment is voile panels as they reduce the direct sunlight entering your home, whilst still brightening the room so that you can benefit from switching your lights off.
Take A Cold Shower
Increased circulation, calm skin and reduced muscle aches are just some of the benefits a cold shower has to offer. But, they’re also useful if you’re wondering how to reduce energy bills at home! For cold shower beginners, try switching the temperature from hot to cold slowly to build up your tolerance.
Not for you? A shower timer is also a great investment to ensure you’re not overusing water and energy, whilst you belt out all the greatest hits.
