Are There Grants For Home Insulation In Ireland?

Poorly insulated homes are a sustainability nightmare – using far more energy in heating to achieve the same consistent temperatures than a modern, properly insulated property. Luckily, thanks to the available grants for home insulation in Ireland, it’s easier than ever to revolutionise your home’s insulation and meet modern and sustainable energy requirements. Read on to find out more about how these grants can help you to improve your home’s insulation.

Attic Insulation Grants

Grants for home insulation in your attic are generally the most cost-effective solution to improving the heat retention of your home. Ideally, your home should have somewhere between 300-400mm of attic insulation but older homes tend to have around 100mm or even none at all.

Attic insulation is suitable for all sorts of properties including apartments, mid-terrace, semi-detached or fully detached houses. Grant values range from:

  • €800 for apartments of any kind
  • €1,200 for mid-terrace houses
  • €1,300 for a semi-detached or end of terrace house
  • €1,500 for a fully detached house

Cavity Wall Insulation Grants

Grants for home insulation can be secured for the injection of insulation material into cavity walls. Installing cavity wall insulation can be a fantastic upgrade to your home. It’s relatively simple to install too. If your cavity walls are uninsulated, then it’s highly advised that you get them completely insulated in order to maximise the heat efficiency of your home.

The available home insulation grants for cavity wall insulation vary depending on the type of property that you’re living in:

  • €700 for apartments of any kind
  • €800 for mid-terrace houses
  • €1,200 for a semi-detached or end of terrace house
  • €1,700 for a fully detached house

Internal Insulation Grants

Internal wall insulation is another type of insulation that you can acquire a grant for and involves affixing insulation boards to the interior of your property’s external walls – otherwise known as dry-lining. Due to the fact that work is being done on the inside of these boards, the installation process can be quite intensive and can involve the removal of skirting boards and potentially flooring while work is being undertaken. Sockets, radiators and switches will also likely have to be moved elsewhere to accommodate the insulation boards.

The grants for home insulation using this process can cover you for the following amounts:

  • €1,500 for apartments of any kind
  • €2,000 for mid-terrace houses
  • €3,500 for a semi-detached or end of terrace house
  • €4,500 for a fully detached house

External Insulation Grants

The most expensive but also the most efficient form of insulation for your walls. External Wall Insulation (also known as house-wrapping insulation) adds 100-150 mm of insulation to the exterior of your property. You may have to account for additional modifications when installing external wall insulation: your downpipes will have to be adjusted and you may have to modify your window sills to account for the additional thickness that the insulation provides.

The value of grants for home insulation of this type vary from:

  • €3,000 for apartments of any kind
  • €3,500 for mid-terrace houses
  • €6,000 for a semi-detached or end of terrace house
  • €8,000 for a fully detached house

How Can I Check If I Am Eligible For Home Insulation Grants?

Any homeowner whose homes were built and occupied before 2011 can apply for these grants (the exact date is defined by the date that your electricity metre was installed). You can only receive each one once.

It is advisable to read through the SEAI’s comprehensive Homeowner’s Guide in order to fully familiarise yourself with the grant application process and discover whether you are eligible.

Other Ways To Improve Your Home Insulation

The SEAI also offers grants for heat pumps which, while not immediately associated with home insulation, are actually a fantastic way of meeting modern energy standards. An air-to-water heat pump extracts heat from the air and transfers it to your home, therefore ensuring that you get heat into your home in the most efficient way possible and giving your home insulation the best chance of performing as it should!
